Wisconsin farmer Ed Gein was arrested in 1957, and what investigators found at his farmhouse had no precedent in American criminal files. He did not inspire one villain — three major horror figures trace back directly to him: Norman Bates in Psycho, Leatherface in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs.
