Synopsis
"The Staircase" (2022) is a crime drama series you can watch online on iFILM. Colin Firth plays Michael Peterson, a North Carolina crime novelist whose wife Kathleen was found dying at the bottom of their home staircase in December 2001. What followed was one of the longest-running true-crime trials in American legal history.
Toni Collette brings Kathleen out of the background that real-life coverage never gave her. Juliette Binoche plays Sophie Thobois, the French documentarian who embedded with Peterson's defense team for years — her footage became the 2004 documentary the show is partly built around. Parker Posey is the prosecutor, Michael Stuhlbarg carries the family's legal strategy, and Sophie Turner and Odessa A'zion play Peterson's daughters caught between loyalty and doubt.
Director Antonio Campos structures the series across multiple timelines, which keeps the central question genuinely open rather than pushing toward resolution the facts don't support.
