Synopsis
Snake & Crane Arts of Shaolin (1978) is a Hong Kong martial arts film with a young Jackie Chan, and you can watch online on iFILM. Eight Shaolin masters distilled the best of every kung fu school into a single manual — the Eight Steps of the Snake and Crane — then vanished without a trace.
The book lands in the hands of a wandering fighter, Hsu Yiu Fong. Rival clans circle him, each desperate to seize its secret techniques and learn what became of the monks. Chan plays him as cocky and grinning, strolling straight into hostile territory and all but daring everyone to swing first. Nora Miao, his frequent co-star of the era, appears alongside.
Director Chen Chi-Hwa shot this a couple of years before Chan rewrote the genre with comedic kung fu in Drunken Master. He's still in a classic mold here, but the loose charm and inventive choreography are already there. Pure old-school for seventies martial arts fans.
