Synopsis
Violette Nozière (1978) is a French-Canadian crime drama by Claude Chabrol, available to watch online on iFILM. Built around a real Paris scandal from 1933: an 18-year-old girl from a respectable working-class household who kept two entirely separate lives running at once.
By day, Violette is the dutiful daughter. By night, she moves through the rougher quarters of the city, spends what little she has on a young man who barely acknowledges her, and nurses a quiet fury toward parents who believe she is someone she is not. Chabrol observes all of this with his trademark detachment — the camera neither condemns nor forgives.
Isabelle Huppert took home the Best Actress prize at Cannes 1978 for the performance. The film holds up not as a courtroom thriller but as a portrait of a person who decided the gap between her two selves was simply too wide to keep closed. Stream Violette Nozière (1978) online on iFILM.
