Synopsis
Get Out Your Handkerchiefs (1978) is Bertrand Blier's tragicomedy you can watch online on iFILM. Raoul is at his wit's end: his wife Solange has sunk into a blank apathy that nothing seems to lift.
His fix is gloriously absurd — find her a lover. He recruits a mild gym teacher, Stéphane, and the two men take turns trying to wake Solange up, plying her with Mozart and good intentions and offering each other up in the process. She stays unreachable, right until a summer camp, where the one person who finally moves her is the last anyone would guess: a gravely serious thirteen-year-old boy. Gérard Depardieu and Patrick Dewaere play a pair of hapless males; Carole Laure is the woman they can't begin to read.
The film took the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, with Depardieu and Dewaere at the peak of the partnership they began in Going Places. It's black comedy built to needle male vanity — provocation that disturbs and amuses in the very same breath. Stream Get Out Your Handkerchiefs (1978) online on iFILM.
