Synopsis
The Bothersome Man (Den brysomme mannen, 2006) is a Norwegian absurdist fantasy-drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Jens Lien from a script by Per Schreiner. Trond Fausa Aurvaag plays Andreas, a forty-year-old man who wakes up in an unfamiliar city with no memory of arriving there.
A job appears. Then an apartment. Then a wife. The people around him are polite, the food looks fine, the offices run smoothly — and none of it has any taste or texture. Nobody laughs at the right moment. Nobody grieves. Andreas tries to leave and finds he can't. The only crack in this perfectly sealed world is a small gap in a cellar wall, and from it comes music that sounds like everything the city isn't.
Lien and writer Per Schreiner keep the tone dry and deadpan throughout, which makes the film funnier and more unsettling than a straightforward horror take would have been. It's a tight 90 minutes for anyone drawn to European art-house, Kafkaesque premises, or stories that treat consumer comfort as a quietly sinister force.
