Synopsis

An ambush on his father forces young Lorenzo into power before he's ready. He rides to Rome chasing the papal accounts, marries Clarice Orsini in a match built on strategy that slowly turns to love, and squeezes the rival Pazzi family from every angle. Most of the season is a chess game played in treaties: deals with Milan and Venice, a fight over the alum mines of Volterra, quiet maneuvers around Archbishop Salviati. Alongside it, a forbidden romance blooms between Giuliano and the beautiful Simonetta. The Pazzi, sick of losing, plot a strike that history would never forget.
