Assembled from a washing machine and miscellaneous spare parts, Charles teaches himself English from a dictionary, develops a distinct personality, and grows increasingly curious about whatever lies beyond the cottage door. David Earl and Chris Hayward play the unlikely pair and wrote the script themselves, expanding their own 2017 short film. Shot in a deadpan mockumentary style, the film is funnier and warmer than the premise suggests — less a sci-fi story than a quiet meditation on loneliness, parenthood, and letting go of the things you make.
