Synopsis
Il Mare (시월애, 2000) is a South Korean romantic fantasy you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Lee Hyun-seung, it follows two people — Eun-ju and Sung-hyun — who live in the same seaside house but are separated by exactly two years: her present is 1999, his is 1997. A mailbox outside the house somehow carries letters back and forth across the gap.
She writes to warn him about a blizzard that hasn't happened yet in his time. He searches for a tape recorder she left behind at a train station where, apparently, they once almost met. The film's quiet pleasure is watching two strangers build something real out of handwriting and guesswork, never quite able to reach each other. Jun Ji-hyun and Lee Jung-jae spend most of the runtime apart and still manage to hold the whole thing together. A gentle, inventive film that earned a Hollywood remake six years later.
