Failan

Failan (파이란, 2001) is a South Korean romance you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Song Hae-sung. A washed-up gangster marries a foreign woman for cash and never bothers to meet her. Choi Min-sik plays him; Cecilia Cheung plays her.

Orphaned and alone, Failan travels to Korea to find her last relatives, only to learn they emigrated to Canada long ago. To stay and earn a living, she takes an arranged marriage brokered by an agency. Her husband on paper is Kang-jae — an aging, broke hood with no standing in his crew. He pockets the fee and forgets her. All she has of him is the photo the agency handed over. So she starts writing him letters.

The whole film rides on two lonely people who never actually share a room. Song keeps the camera quiet and saves the weight for the ending, when Kang-jae finally reads the words Failan never got to say out loud. Choi Min-sik, usually cast as a brute, plays a man coming apart instead. For anyone who loves restrained Asian drama about a love that arrives too late, this one hits hard.
