The Girl in the Fog

The Girl in the Fog (La ragazza nella nebbia, 2017) is an Italian mystery thriller with Toni Servillo, ready to watch online on iFILM. A snowbound Alpine town, a missing teenager, and a detective who cares more about the story than the truth.

It is Christmas night, the fog is thick, and sixteen-year-old Anna Lou steps out toward the lit-up church and simply vanishes. No body, no signs of a struggle, not one witness. Into the sleepy valley comes Inspector Vogel (Servillo), a big-city celebrity famous for cracking lurid cases. The trouble is, he hunts headlines as much as suspects, feeding the cameras a tidy theory and a convenient target in the local teacher (Alessio Boni). Cutting through it all is a second timeline: the night after a car crash, psychiatrist Flores (Jean Reno) questions Vogel, whose shirt is soaked in someone else's blood.

Director Donato Carrisi adapted his own novel and built the film as a puzzle box, an investigation folded inside an investigation where the manipulator could be sitting on either side of the desk. Servillo plays the icy cynic so well you can never tell if he is a genius or a fraud with a badge. One for fans of twisty European crime films that spring a trap at the end.
