Synopsis
Dodge City (1939) is a classic studio Western you can watch online on iFILM. Michael Curtiz directs, with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland heading the cast as one of old Hollywood's most charming pairings. The setting is a wide-open cattle town at the end of the rail line, where, as the poster warns, the law and the Almighty both gave up at the city limits.
Wade Hatton, an Irish-born wagon master and ex-soldier, rides into Dodge just as gambling, gunfire and crooked dealing have taken over, with local boss Jeff Surrett running the show. Hatton resists getting involved for as long as he can, then pins on the sheriff's star and starts cleaning the place up. Along the way he courts Abbie Irving (de Havilland), who has her own reasons to keep him at arm's length.
Shot in rich three-strip Technicolor, the film set the template for decades of studio Westerns, and its enormous saloon brawl became a genre benchmark.
