Synopsis
The Egyptian (1954) is Michael Curtiz's lavish historical drama, free to watch online — a Hollywood epic set in 14th-century-BC Egypt during a war over the gods themselves.
Sinuhe, a foundling who claws his way up to become a skilled physician, is pulled into the court of Pharaoh Akhenaten, the ruler who tried to swap Egypt's crowded pantheon for a single sun-god, Aten. The priests seethe. The kingdom splinters. And Sinuhe throws away everything for Nefer, a Babylonian seductress who ruins men for sport. Edmund Purdom carries it, backed by Victor Mature, Jean Simmons, Gene Tierney and a wry Peter Ustinov.
It's adapted from Finnish author Mika Waltari's worldwide bestseller, and Curtiz — the man behind Casablanca — shoots it as a sweeping CinemaScope spectacle about faith, power and one man's search for meaning. Stagey by modern standards, but gorgeous to look at if you love old-school sword-and-sandal grandeur. Stream The Egyptian (1954) online on iFILM.
