Synopsis
King Creole (1958) is a crime musical drama from Michael Curtiz that you can watch online on iFILM. Many fans point to it as the finest piece of acting Elvis Presley ever put on screen.
The setting is New Orleans, all heat and noise in the French Quarter. Danny Fisher has dropped out of school and buses tables in a nightclub until the night he finally grabs the mic and stops the room cold. The voice turns him into an overnight draw, and that draws the wrong kind of attention: local racketeer Maxie Fields wants him singing at his own joint. Danny says no. Fields is not a man who hears no. Walter Matthau plays the boss, with Carolyn Jones and Dean Jagger rounding out the cast.
Curtiz, the director behind Casablanca, shapes the film from Harold Robbins' novel A Stone for Danny Fisher. Presley does more than perform numbers here; he acts, and commits to it, caught between the blues, the mob, and two very different women. A great way into his film work if you only know Elvis from the records. Stream King Creole (1958) online on iFILM.
