West of Memphis
An examination of a failure of justice in Arkansas
Synopsis
West of Memphis (2012) is a documentary you can watch online on iFILM. It walks through one of the American South's most disputed murder cases: three teenagers locked up for a killing they may never have committed.
In the spring of 1993, three eight-year-old boys were found dead in a small Arkansas town. Suspicion landed fast on three local teens, with the prosecution leaning on rumors of a "satanic cult" and a coerced confession. Damien Echols drew a death sentence; his friends got life. Director Amy Berg was handed a seat inside the defense itself, following fresh DNA testing, re-interviewed witnesses, and a hard look at who else could have done it. The camera tracks the case step by step instead of steering you toward a tidy answer.
Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh produced it and bankrolled the private investigation for years, while Eddie Vedder and Johnny Depp lent their voices to the men behind bars. What you get is less a record of one botched inquiry than a study of how a few stubborn people can move a machine that already handed down its verdict. Stream West of Memphis (2012) online on iFILM.
