Synopsis
Hamilton: In the Interest of the Nation (2012) is a Swedish action thriller by Kathrine Windfeld that you can watch online on iFILM. Special agent Carl Hamilton goes undercover among the traffickers who intercepted a shipment of GPS-guided precision shells exported by Sweden's defense industry.
The deal collapses fast. A squad of mercenaries hits the buyers, leaves no one alive, and vanishes with the weapons, while Hamilton barely escapes the slaughter. Meanwhile a Swedish arms engineer is taken captive in Somalia. The prime minister signs off on a rescue run by a private American outfit, on one condition — a Stockholm observer rides along, and that observer is Hamilton. It does not take him long to sense that someone in the chain is lying outright. Mikael Persbrandt plays Carl, with Jason Flemyng, Pernilla August and Saba Mubarak alongside.
The film draws on Jan Guillou's long-running novels about the Swedish operative, a character adapted to the screen many times over. This version reboots Hamilton as a lean European thriller: less polish, more grubby fieldwork and distrust of his own bosses. One for spy fans who want their agents human-sized.
