Synopsis
Tehran Taboo (2017) is Ali Soozandeh's adult animated drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. This German-Austrian film was made by rotoscoping live performers frame by frame, which gives Tehran a look that's both recognizable and slightly haunted.
Three women and a young musician collide in a city leading a double life. Prostitution, affairs, drugs and bribery run right alongside strict religious law, and dodging the rules has become an everyday skill. One woman sells sex with her small son in tow; another hunts for a virginity certificate before her wedding; a third wants a divorce no court will grant her. Every move carries a cost, and the film never pauses to lecture.
Soozandeh reached for animation out of necessity rather than style: shooting this with real faces inside Iran would have been dangerous. It premiered in Cannes Critics' Week in 2017.
