Synopsis
The Pirate (1948) is Vincente Minnelli's musical comedy, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Technicolor, MGM, Judy Garland and Gene Kelly together — a Caribbean town where shy Manuela daydreams about Macoco, a legendary buccaneer she has never met.
Manuela is being married off to the town's plump, dreary mayor against her wishes. Then a traveling entertainer named Serafin rolls in, falls for her on sight, and once he learns of her secret fantasy he announces that he is the fearsome Macoco himself. The lie snowballs — rope acrobatics, chases, a song at every turn — until it becomes clear which man in this story actually carried a pirate's sword. Garland and Kelly play it right at the edge of farce without losing the warmth underneath.
Cole Porter wrote the score, and Kelly closes the film dancing "Be a Clown" alongside the Nicholas Brothers, one of the studio's most infectious tap numbers. The movie left audiences cool on release but grew into a cult favorite and a touchstone of the golden-age MGM musical. Light, knowing fun for anyone who misses old Hollywood in full color.
