Their little sister Tootie, played by Margaret O'Brien, approaches Halloween with a gravity that borders on alarming. Everything is comfortable and ordered — until their father announces the family will be relocating to New York. Nobody wants to go. The whole film is essentially about how a place becomes part of who you are.

Garland recorded "The Trolley Song" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" for this picture — both became American classics. Minnelli's direction is warm and unhurried, the kind of filmmaking that trusts its characters. O'Brien picked up a special juvenile Academy Award for her performance.
