Synopsis
The Small Town (Kasaba, 1997) is a black-and-white Turkish drama you can watch online on iFILM. It's the feature debut of Nuri Bilge Ceylan, who would later take the Palme d'Or. Don't come for plot — there isn't one in the usual sense. There's the life of a single family in a remote Anatolian village, seen through the eyes of a young brother and sister.
The film moves with the seasons. On a snowy winter morning, a teacher explains to the class how society is meant to work; by a late-summer evening, the same children sit at a campfire on the edge of a field, listening to the grown-ups drift toward talk of death, poverty and disappointment. Ceylan lets the camera rest on snow, grass and faces, shooting slowly and almost like documentary.
This is cinema for viewers who love contemplative art-house and don't need pace: no chases, no twists, just childhood brushing up against the hard machinery of adult life. Everything Ceylan became as a filmmaker starts here. Stream The Small Town (1997) online on iFILM.
