Synopsis
True Mothers (朝が来る, 2020) is a Japanese drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Naomi Kawase, who took the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2007 for The Mourning Forest. The film runs 140 minutes and adapts Mizuki Tsujimura's novel of the same name.
Satoko and Kiyokazu adopted a baby boy after years of failed fertility treatments; the birth mother, a fourteen-year-old named Hikari, consented to the adoption. Six years of quiet family life end when a woman appears at Satoko's door claiming to be the boy's real mother — return the child, or pay. The film moves across two timelines: the adoptive household in the present and young Hikari's story in the months before and after she gave birth. Kawase never frames this as a case of wrongdoer and victim. Both women have a credible claim to the word mother, and the film's refusal to resolve that tension is what makes it linger well past its 140 minutes. Watch True Mothers (2020) online on iFILM.
