Synopsis
The Boy from Medellín (2020) is Matthew Heineman's documentary about J Balvin, and you can watch online on iFILM. In the week before a massive hometown concert in Medellín, Colombia, the reggaeton superstar gets ready to face a stadium of his own people.
The camera stays close as nationwide protests erupt around him. Balvin is caught in the middle: should an entertainer keep quiet, or say from the stage what the streets are demanding? Heineman skips the glossy portrait and films the singer living with anxiety and depression — rehearsing, calling family, second-guessing every move. The hit records, the billions of streams and the fame sit right next to some very private, uncomfortable conversations.
The result is an honest look at the cost of celebrity and whether a pop star owes the public a political voice. It lands for fans of Latin music and anyone who likes documentaries about the underside of fame. Stream The Boy from Medellín (2020) online on iFILM.
