The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms
You'll see it tear a city apart!
Synopsis
The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953) is an American sci-fi horror classic you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Eugène Lourié and adapted from a Ray Bradbury short story, it was the first creature feature to tie a monster's awakening directly to atomic testing — a formula that would define an entire genre.
A nuclear detonation in the Arctic thaws a prehistoric carnivore that has been frozen there since before recorded history. It moves south along the Atlantic coast and eventually reaches Manhattan. Paul Hubschmid plays scientist Tom Nesbit, the only surviving witness, who has to fight for anyone to believe him before the city pays the price. The creature work is by Ray Harryhausen — his stop-motion dinosaur moves with an unease that model-shop monsters rarely achieved.
Released at the height of Cold War nuclear anxiety, the film landed with audiences who understood exactly what the beast stood for. It directly inspired the original Godzilla the following year and seeded everything that came after in the kaiju tradition. Stream The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953) online on iFILM.
