Synopsis

The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961) is a British science-fiction film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Val Guest. When the US and the USSR detonate nuclear bombs on the same day, the blasts knock Earth off its axis and start it drifting toward the sun.

The disaster unfolds inside the newsroom of London's Daily Express. Burnt-out reporter Peter Stenning (Edward Judd) chases small scandals until the heatwaves, fog and dried-up rivers add up to something far worse. Science editor Bill Maguire (Leo McKern) supplies the gallows humor; switchboard girl Jeannie (Janet Munro) brings a romance that flickers while the planet cooks.

Guest builds dread with almost no effects — just headlines, sweat and a ticking print deadline. The ending refuses to tell you which way it goes: two front pages sit ready, one for survival, one for the end. It took the BAFTA for Best British Screenplay and still ranks among the smartest apocalypses Britain ever filmed. Stream The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961) online on iFILM.
