Synopsis
The Railway Children (1970) is a British family film you can watch online on iFILM, drawn from Edith Nesbit's beloved novel. Lionel Jeffries directed it, and a young Jenny Agutter leads as Bobbie.
Set just after the turn of the 20th century, the story begins when Mr. Waterbury is arrested on suspicion of selling state secrets. His wife and their three children — Bobbie, Peter and Phyllis — leave comfortable London life for a plain cottage in Yorkshire. The embankment beside the railway becomes their whole world: they wave at passing trains, befriend the station porter, flag down an express to stop a landslide disaster, and never stop hoping their father will return.
There's no real mystery here, just tone — warm and never cloying. The children carry actual responsibility and adult-sized worries, and the final platform scene has long been a touchstone of British cinema. A good fit for a calm family evening when the loud animated stuff has worn thin. Stream The Railway Children (1970) online on iFILM.
