Synopsis
A Touch of Zen (俠女, 1970) is a landmark Hong Kong-Taiwanese wuxia fantasy you can watch online on iFILM. Director King Hu sets his story in dynastic China: a mild-mannered scholar named Gu Sheng-zhai has no ambitions beyond sketching portraits and chatting with his mother in a crumbling fort. Then a beautiful, guarded woman moves in next door — and his quiet life cracks open.
The woman, Yang Hui-zhen, is a fugitive princess hunted by agents of a corrupt imperial guard. Gu gets pulled into her fight whether he wants to or not. What starts as a slow, almost domestic mystery builds through ambushes and hidden passages into something stranger — Buddhist monks whose martial arts edge toward the supernatural, political conspiracies reaching back decades, and a third act that tilts the entire film toward allegory.
King Hu's film took the Grand Prix at Cannes in 1975 and remains the defining work of classical wuxia cinema. At three hours it moves deliberately, more like a painting that breathes than an action picture. Stream A Touch of Zen online on iFILM.
