Synopsis
Black Beauty (1994) is a family adventure film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Caroline Thompson and based on Anna Sewell's 1877 novel. Alan Cumming voices the horse; Sean Bean, David Thewlis and Jim Carter appear among the humans who move through the animal's life as owners, grooms and strangers.
The story is told as a memoir. Black Beauty looks back across his years — a happy start on open meadows, then a succession of masters ranging from tender to cruel, the noise and grime of Victorian London, hard labour and occasional kindness. Thompson, who wrote the screenplays for Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas, treats Sewell's source material with the same care the author brought to it: the novel was published as an argument for humane treatment of working animals, and the film carries that intent without lecturing.
For younger viewers it reads as a straightforward adventure about loyalty and survival. For adults, there is something quietly pointed in watching England's class system through the eyes of a creature who cannot choose who owns him. Stream Black Beauty (1994) online on iFILM.
