Checkmates

Checkmates (Menudas piezas, 2024) is a Spanish comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Nacho G. Velilla. It follows Candela (Alexandra Jiménez), a teacher whose comfortable career collapses in a single day.

Pushed out of an elite school, Candela lands at a rough neighborhood high school, handed a class of difficult teenagers nobody expects anything from. Chess enters their lives almost by accident — at first just a way to fill the hours. But the scattered group of misfits starts taking the game seriously, and before long they're chasing a shot at the national championship.

The setup is the familiar one: one teacher, one written-off class. What lifts it is Jiménez's loose, warm performance and a streak of Spanish humor that mixes affection with sarcasm. The point lands cleanly — at the board it doesn't matter whether you're a king or a pawn, only the next move counts. An easy watch for a night when you want to laugh and unwind.
