Synopsis
The Odyssey (L'Odyssée, 2016) is a French biographical drama about Jacques-Yves Cousteau you can watch online on iFILM. A former navy officer hooked on the sea, Cousteau rebuilds a worn-out minesweeper into the research ship Calypso and sails his family into a thirty-year voyage. A camera, an aqualung, a loyal crew — and the whole ocean ahead.
Lambert Wilson plays Cousteau without the halo: a man who chased the glory of discovery and spent the people closest to him to get it. Audrey Tautou is his wife Simone, who kept Calypso running while he hunted footage and sponsors. Pierre Niney is their son Philippe, raised in the shadow of a legend and slow to forgive his father. Director Jérôme Salle shot on real reefs and glaciers, from Antarctic ice to warm tropical water.
This isn't a polished tribute. The film watches a pioneer of underwater filmmaking realize, too late, that he was harming the world he filmed — and turn into one of its defenders.
