Synopsis
Dave Chappelle: 8:46 (2020) is a spoken-word special you can watch online on iFILM. Filmed on June 6, 2020, directed by documentary filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar, it runs 27 minutes and works less as stand-up than as a reckoning.
The title carries two meanings. Eight minutes and forty-six seconds: how long an officer's knee was on George Floyd's neck. And the exact time of morning Chappelle was born. He talks about police violence, about the pressure placed on Black artists to speak for their entire community every time something like this happens, and about celebrities who rushed to post statements they had no right to make. He had stayed quiet. This is his explanation.
