Synopsis
The Man Standing Next (남산의 부장들, 2020) is a political thriller from director Woo Min-ho that you can watch online on iFILM. It traces the forty days leading up to the gunshots that ended President Park Chung-hee's long rule in 1979.
Lee Byung-hun plays the chief of Korea's all-powerful intelligence agency — a man who spent years shielding the regime and now watches it turn on itself. His ousted predecessor has fled to Washington and threatens to spill the agency's secrets before Congress. The president leans harder on his brutal head of security, sidelining loyalists of years past. Loyalty, jealousy and dread coil inside a single office on Namsan mountain until the spymaster makes the choice that rewrote his country's history.
The tension here lives in held glances and unspoken threats rather than shootouts. Woo builds a cold, polished study of how power actually operates, drawing on a best-selling investigative book. The film carried South Korea's flag into the Oscar race and ranked among the year's biggest local hits. Lee Byung-hun's restrained, simmering turn is reason enough to watch, even if Korean politics is unfamiliar ground. Stream The Man Standing Next (2020) online on iFILM.
