Synopsis
Jesus of Montreal (Jésus de Montréal, 1989) is Denys Arcand's drama, free to watch online on iFILM. Out-of-work actor Daniel agrees to refresh a tired Passion play staged on the grounds of a Montreal basilica.
He recruits four fellow performers and rewrites the script around his own research into the historical Jesus. The show becomes a sensation — packed crowds, glowing reviews — until the Catholic hierarchy brands it heresy and moves to shut it down. Lothaire Bluteau plays Daniel, with Rémy Girard and Catherine Wilkening rounding out a troupe whose offstage lives slowly begin to echo the gospel they perform.
