Synopsis
Marius (1931) is a French drama-comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Alexander Korda. It is the first film in Marcel Pagnol's Marseille trilogy — adapted by Pagnol himself from his own stage play. Raimu plays César, the warm-hearted owner of a dockside bar; Pierre Fresnay is his son Marius.
The port is Marseille. Marius has grown up alongside Fanny, and they love each other — but every ship's whistle pulls at something in him that love can't hold down. When elderly merchant Panisse proposes to Fanny and a departing clipper needs a deckhand, the two face a choice with no clean answer.
At 128 minutes, the film moves at a theatrical pace — it was shot with much of the original stage cast — and earns every minute of it. Pagnol's dialogue is warm, witty, and occasionally devastating. Watch Marius (1931) online on iFILM.
