Synopsis
Gloomy Sunday (1999) is a German-Hungarian drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Rolf Schübel from Nick Barkow's novel. The film is built around the legend of a real Hungarian melody — "the suicide song of Budapest" — blamed for a wave of deaths in the 1930s.
Budapest, early 1930s. Restaurant owner Laszlo hires pianist András, and both fall for the same woman: Ilona, the waitress who inspires his only composition. Three people build a fragile arrangement — she doesn't choose, they don't fight. Then a German named Hans arrives and tips the balance. Erika Marozsán as Ilona is the film's quiet center; Stefano Dionisi and Joachim Król are the men pulled into her orbit.
Slow, gorgeous, and heavy in the right way — a European period drama that takes its time and then makes you feel it. Stream Gloomy Sunday online on iFILM.
