Synopsis
Zoom (2016) is Pedro Morelli's comedy-drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. This Brazilian-Canadian film stacks three stories that draw each other in a loop: a comic-book artist, a novelist and an action-movie director, each one authoring another.
Emma molds rubber sex dolls on a factory line and, on her breaks, pencils a comic about Edward, a cocky maker of explosions and car chases. Edward is busy shooting a film about Michelle, a supermodel. Michelle ditches the runway to write a novel about a girl who works at a factory. Pull one thread and the neighboring reality shifts; everyone keeps rewriting somebody else's life without realizing they've been drawn by someone too. Gael García Bernal, Alison Pill and Mariana Ximenes carry the merry-go-round, and one whole strand is rendered in rotoscoped animation laid over live footage.
Morelli built a sly little machine about authors and characters swapping seats, formally bold yet light on its feet. It's for viewers who like nested storytelling and don't mind a plot that folds in on itself. Stream Zoom (2016) online on iFILM.
