Coonskin

Coonskin (1975) is Ralph Bakshi's incendiary satire, available to watch online on iFILM. Bakshi splices live action with animation: a prison break frames the drawn fable of Brother Rabbit, Brother Bear, and Preacher Fox.

The three head north to Harlem and bull their way into the local rackets. Standing in their path: a con man posing as a prophet, a racist cop, and a Mafia outfit that owns the block. They don't back down — one move at a time, they take the streets for themselves. Bakshi grabs the old Uncle Remus tales and twists them into a vicious fable about race, violence, and money. Barry White, Philip Michael Thomas, and Scatman Crothers fill out the cast.
