Jagga Jasoos

Jagga Jasoos (2017) is Anurag Basu's Indian musical mystery, and you can watch online on iFILM. Young detective Jagga has stammered since childhood, so he learned to sing instead of speak — the words come easy that way. When his adoptive father suddenly disappears, the boy sets off across thousands of kilometres to trace him.

Ranbir Kapoor plays Jagga as a nimble kid with a razor-sharp eye, while Katrina Kaif is Shruti, the reporter who falls into the role of his travel companion and chronicler. Their trail loops through sleepy Indian towns and out to the African savanna, and what looks like a simple search for a missing parent slowly uncovers an arms-smuggling racket. Across nearly three hours, Basu shapes the film as a family adventure: chases, absurd coincidences, wild animals, and song numbers that carry the story in place of ordinary dialogue.

The director openly nods to the Tintin comics and old-school adventure cinema, which explains Ravi Varman's saturated images and the picture's constant motion. Pritam, Basu's regular collaborator, wrote the score. It won't suit everyone — the rhythm is uneven and the plot logic stays loose — but for viewers willing to accept the conventions of a Bollywood musical, it offers a rare mix of childlike wonder and visual invention.
