Synopsis
The House by the Sea (La Villa, 2017) is a French drama by Robert Guédiguian, available to watch online on iFILM. On a small cove near Marseille sits an old family villa. Three grown children come back to it after years apart, drawn home by the failing health of their father, who has fallen silent after a stroke.
The waiting days turn into a quiet reckoning. What survives of the old man's ideals, of the close-knit community he once built on this shore, of their own youthful convictions? Then a wrecked boat leaves a few refugee children stranded in the next inlet, and abstract talk about conscience suddenly demands a real decision. Ariane Ascaride and Jean-Pierre Darroussin lead an ensemble of the director's longtime collaborators.
Guédiguian once again films his beloved Marseille and his regular troupe with no hurry and no melodrama. This is small, talky cinema about aging, memory and left-wing beliefs tested against the present. It will reward anyone who likes patient European drama with a social pulse.
