Dead End Drive-In
There's a party every day, a movie every night, and all the junk food you can eat. What more can a kid want... except to get out.
Synopsis
Dead End Drive-In (1986) is an Australian dystopian thriller you can watch online on iFILM. The economy has collapsed, the streets have turned feral, and a young guy nicknamed Crabs takes his girlfriend Carmen to a rundown drive-in for a night out.
The date turns into a cage. Overnight the wheels vanish off Crabs' car, and the drive-in shows its true face — a barbed-wire camp where the state dumps unemployed kids. Free junk food, free movies, cheap beer, anything to keep them parked and out of sight. Most of them settle in and stop fighting. Crabs won't. He starts working out a way past the fence on his own. Ned Manning and Natalie McCurry take the leads.
Director Brian Trenchard-Smith, a king of low-budget Australian genre cinema, smuggles sharp social satire inside a punk action picture: acid neon, customized wrecks and pure 1980s grime. Quentin Tarantino has championed it for years and slotted it into his own retrospectives. If you grew up on Mad Max and grindhouse sci-fi, this one is aimed straight at you.
