Synopsis
Prefontaine (1997) tells the real story of distance runner Steve Prefontaine, and you can watch online on iFILM. Jared Leto plays the kid they called the James Dean of track — a front-runner who refused to hide in the pack and led every race from the gun.
Raised in the logging town of Coos Bay, Oregon, Pre goes from local unknown to national-record holder with a whole country running behind him. His college coach (R. Lee Ermey) sharpens that stubborn streak, and Pre heads to the 1972 Munich Olympics with one rule: never coast. What happened in Munich, and how his life ended at twenty-four, the film lays out plainly.
It's directed by Steve James, the documentary maker behind Hoop Dreams, and his feel for sport runs through every scene. Leto is wiry and bullheaded, never showy. This one's for viewers who care more about a person's grit than the medal count. Stream Prefontaine (1997) online on iFILM.
