Synopsis

Tokyo Drifter (東京流れ者, 1966) is a Japanese yakuza film directed by Seijun Suzuki — watch it online on iFILM. When mob boss Kurata decides to disband his criminal empire and go straight, his top enforcer Tetsuya "Phoenix Tetsu" Hondo tries to follow him out. A rival gang reads the exit as an opening, sending the relentless hitman known as the Viper to track Tetsu down across the country.

Tetsu refuses to switch allegiances and instead drifts from town to town — roadside bars, snowstorm shootouts, alliances that don't hold. Suzuki shot the film in a deliberately fractured, pop-art style that Nikkatsu Studio hadn't asked for: clashing primary colors, theatrical sets that look painted, editing rhythms borrowed from avant-garde film. The studio was furious. Decades later, the film is considered one of the defining works of Japanese genre cinema.

This is one of those rare cases where the style isn't decoration — it's the argument. Tetsu's rootless wandering makes visual sense because the world around him is already unstable and artificial. Stream Tokyo Drifter (1966) online on iFILM.
