Ana and Bruno

Ana y Bruno (2017), released abroad as Ana and Bruno, is a Mexican animated fantasy you can watch online on iFILM. Director Carlos Carrera follows nine-year-old Ana, who arrives at a deserted beach with her mother only to learn that her mother is in danger — and that the one person who can help is the father she's never known.

Her search pulls her into a strange realm crowded with monsters, each carrying its own wound and its own backstory. Awkward, frightening, oddly tender, they become her travelling companions. The voice cast includes Marina de Tavira and Damián Alcázar.

Carrera, whose The Crime of Father Amaro once reached an Oscar nomination, doesn't sand the edges off here. This is closer to a dark fable about fear and growing up than a tidy kids' cartoon — unsettling in places, and better for it. Family viewing for anyone who doesn't mind a few scares.
