Like Mother, Like Daughter

Like Mother, Like Daughter (Telle mère, telle fille, 2017) is a French comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Noémie Saglio and starring Juliette Binoche alongside Camille Cottin. Mado is nearly fifty, unemployed, living with her thirty-year-old daughter Avril and her son-in-law, and firmly committed to not behaving her age. Then Avril turns up pregnant — which would normally mean grandmother territory for Mado. Except Mado is also pregnant.

The film's best joke is how the two women's reactions mirror and clash at the same time: Avril is horrified because she knows exactly what kind of mother Mado has been, and Mado is horrified for reasons that have nothing to do with the baby. Binoche throws herself into the role without vanity, and the result is funnier than most French comedies of this kind.
