Synopsis
Why We Fight (2005) is Eugene Jarecki's documentary, free to watch online on iFILM. The title borrows from Frank Capra's wartime propaganda reels, then flips the question: why has the military grown into the backbone of American politics and money?
Jarecki opens with President Eisenhower's farewell address and his warning about the rising power of the military-industrial complex. From there the film traces how that warning came true — arms contractors, lobbyists working the halls of Congress, the road to the invasion of Iraq. Voices on every side speak straight to camera: Senator John McCain, writer Gore Vidal, neoconservative Richard Perle, analyst Chalmers Johnson. They argue. They don't agree.
The film took the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and was pulled together across five countries — the US, Britain, France, Denmark and Canada. Watch it if you want a hard, clear-eyed look at how a nation decides to go to war. Stream Why We Fight (2005) online on iFILM.
