Synopsis
Romanzo Criminale (2005) is Michele Placido's Italian gangster epic, available to watch online on iFILM. Rome in the 1970s runs on cheap thrills and quiet menace, and three street kids — Libano, Freddo and Dandi — decide the whole city ought to be theirs.
It starts with a kidnapping for ransom. Then comes the heroin, the contract killings, the carving up of neighborhoods block by block. Libano is hooked on the power itself and wants the gang to swallow Rome's entire underworld. Freddo and Dandi just want money, women and a way out alive, and that split in what each man craves is the crack that will eventually break them. Inspector Scialoja trails the crew, certain their swagger will curdle into slaughter. Behind it all loom the Mafia, rogue intelligence agents and the terror of Italy's Years of Lead.
The film draws on a novel by judge Giancarlo De Cataldo and on the real Banda della Magliana, who ruled the capital for three decades. Kim Rossi Stuart, Pierfrancesco Favino, Stefano Accorsi and Riccardo Scamarcio lead the cast.
