Synopsis
The Fog of War (2003) is Errol Morris's Oscar-winning documentary you can watch online on iFILM — 107 minutes with Robert McNamara, the former U.S. Secretary of Defense, who sat down at age 85 to recount the wars of the twentieth century from the inside. Eleven lessons. One man's lifetime of decisions. An uncountable number of dead.
McNamara walks through his arc: statistical analyst behind the March 1945 firebombing that leveled much of Tokyo, then Ford Motor Company president, then the chief architect of Vietnam policy under Kennedy and Johnson. Morris structures the interview around eleven principles McNamara himself distills from experience — on the nature of error, on what happens when rational calculation meets the fog of combat, on why intelligent men keep choosing catastrophe. Cabinet recordings and declassified White House tapes run underneath his words, turning memoir into something closer to evidence.
The film took home the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. It is not a verdict — it is a dissection. Stream The Fog of War (2003) online on iFILM.
