From there: Berlin, his cousin Elsa, a first marriage that cracks, a war that turns his friend Fritz Haber into an opponent, and a visa that J. Edgar Hoover personally tries to block. The genius here isn't a poster saint but a man with debts, affairs and a stubborn streak.
