Again one life is told at two ages. The young Spaniard lands in Paris, copies the masters and seethes that his own voice won't come—until a friend's suicide opens his Blue Period and an argument with Georges Braque invents cubism. The older Picasso meets the war in occupied Paris and refuses to run, joins the Communist Party, and ricochets between Dora Maar, Françoise Gilot and Jacqueline Roque. Brush and bed feed each other here: every muse leaves a mark on the canvases, and every one of them pays for it. By the end he shuts the world out chasing a single perfect painting.
