Nanking
The true story of how a few brave souls saved the lives of thousands.
Synopsis
Nanking (2007) is a US documentary you can watch online on iFILM. Directors Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman built the film around first-person accounts: Woody Harrelson, Rosalind Chao, Steven Dorff, and Jürgen Prochnow read aloud the diaries and letters of Western expatriates who refused to leave the city during the Japanese occupation of December 1937.
Over three months, more than 200,000 civilians were killed. A small group of missionaries, diplomats, and doctors stayed behind and set up a Safety Zone that sheltered a quarter of a million Chinese. The film makes no closing argument — it puts the documents in front of you and steps back. Stream Nanking (2007) online on iFILM.
