Synopsis
I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians (2018) is a Romanian historical drama you can watch online on iFILM — Grand Prix winner at Karlovy Vary. The title quotes Marshal Antonescu verbatim: words spoken at a cabinet session in the summer of 1941, authorizing mass killings on the Eastern Front. Director Radu Jude takes that sentence and refuses to let it stay in the past.
The story is set in contemporary Bucharest, where theatre director Mariana is staging a public reenactment of Romania's military actions near Odessa. City officials push back — tone it down, cancel it, make it less uncomfortable. Ioana Iacob plays Mariana with blunt, unsettling conviction; Alexandru Dabija and Alexandru Bogdan round out a cast navigating the gap between historical record and national comfort.
At 139 minutes, the film earns every scene. Jude doesn't give history the distance it usually gets — the reenactment format keeps folding the past into the present until the two are indistinguishable. Not for viewers who need their historical cinema painless. Watch on iFILM.
